A London Mini Break

sunny 15 °C

As I'm not in Mexico it was definitely time to start my holiday with a London Mini Break (yup a day trip from Archway to zone 1 - oh the glamour!).

I've been dying to try one of James "Grow Your Own Drugs" Wong's recipes for a while, but I've been held back by not having a garden. So it was off to Elephant & Castle with Di for a trip to G Baldwin & Co's amazing 165 year old herb shop. No need to grow my own drugs as Mr Baldwin has grown them for me!

After the delights of Elephant & Castle we needed something a bit more relaxing, so we headed to the Barbican's "The Curve" gallery which is filled with tiny finches, electric guitars and cymbals filled with bird seed or water. Every time a finch lands on the guitar strings they make sweet music, very soothing.

It was time to say goodbye to Di, and I decided there was only one place to go for lunch - Brick Lane, for a bagel. On the way I stumbled across Bob's Books set the peaceful courtyards of Devonshire Square near Liverpool Street, and the Alternative Fashion Show at Spitalfields Market.

I've discovered lots of great bits of London today that I would never have found without my enforced London holiday. Latest news is that there might be flights tomorrow...

Nott Landing (or even Taking Off...)

sunny 16 °C

It seems like the name of this blog might be a sign. I was supposed to fly to Cancun in Mexico on Friday 16th April, around 12 hours after UK airspace was shut for the first time in living memory, due to the (snappily named) Eyjafjallajoekull volcano erupting in Iceland.

It's not a complete disaster as the wonderful people at Gap Adventures are allowing me to change my tour, Continental Airlines are changing my flight (regularly!), I have a horrible cold (thanks Matt!) and the weather in London is amazing.

So the question is, if my flight gets delayed for another week, how to fill a week?
I've left my job (after 6 years of active service), my beloved Oyster card is now on "Pay-as-you-go", my Lovefilm account is on hold, and I've already said goodbye to my friends...this is starting to feel like borrowed time!
